Educational Placements Abroad (EPA) is an educational agency which arranges study abroad programmes for a number of universities in the USA. Their brief is to set up internship positions for students who come to Edinburgh, working with Napier University in Edinburgh, for sixteen weeks to do unpaid work (Voluntary work) related to their chosen academic/career fields. Sarah Gibson is MSTC Lothian’s new EPA student. She is currently a third year student studying Health Sciences at Furman University in South Carolina.

Sarah says:

This semester, my home University gave me the opportunity to study abroad in Edinburgh and take part in a once and a life time internship experience. I was placed at the MS Therapy Centre because of my interest in pursuing a career in physiotherapy as well as my desire to help others.

My first visit to the centre was met with warm welcomes from staff, volunteers, and clients alike! I didn’t know much about MS then, but after working at the centre for over two months now I have had the chance to talk to clients about their personal experiences and how the centre has impacted their lives.

I delight in speaking with clients, but that’s not the only thing I’ve done at the centre. I have been trained in oxygen treatment, and I have assisted the physios with classes, interviewed clients about their experiences, covered reception, shadowed the physiotherapists, and assessed the services at the centre.

My main project has been to conduct some evaluation work in order to fully assess the services at the centre. Surveying clients has given me a deeper understanding of what it is like to live with MS and other chronic conditions. It has also shed light on how amazing the centre is in terms of the quality of treatments, its supportiveness, and its welcoming atmosphere.

With that being said, I am excited to see how many more lives the MS Therapy Centre will impact in the years to come!
